Moringa oleifera has garnered scientific interest for its potential role in supporting or treating metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions including obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and insulin resistance. Several preclinical studies and a growing number of small-scale human trials have investigated moringa's effects on metabolic parameters. The plant is rich in bioactive compounds such as polyphenols, flavonoids, and glucosinolates, which possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Animal studies have demonstrated that moringa leaf extracts can improve lipid profiles, reduce blood glucose levels, and attenuate weight gain in models of metabolic syndrome. Human studies, though limited in scale and duration, have shown promising effects, such as reductions in fasting blood glucose and improvements in cholesterol and triglyceride levels among individuals with type 2 diabetes or overweight.
The mechanisms proposed include the modulation of enzymes involved in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, enhancement of insulin sensitivity, and reduction of oxidative stress.
