Mushroom protein, derived from edible fungi such as Pleurotus (oyster mushrooms), Agaricus bisporus (button mushrooms), and others, has been investigated for potential benefits in managing aspects of Metabolic Syndrome. The evidence supporting its use is primarily preclinical (animal and in vitro studies), with limited but growing human data. Mushrooms are rich in protein, fiber, beta-glucans, and bioactive compounds like ergothioneine and polyphenols, which have been shown to exert anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and cholesterol-lowering effects in laboratory and animal models. A few small clinical studies have suggested that including edible mushrooms in the diet may improve lipid profiles, reduce blood pressure, and support glycemic control—all relevant factors in Metabolic Syndrome. However, most of these studies focus on whole mushrooms or extracts, rather than isolated mushroom protein. There is a lack of large, well-controlled human studies directly linking mushroom protein supplementation to improvements in Metabolic Syndrome as a whole. The protein fraction itself is considered hypoallergenic, digestible, and low in calories, making it a promising alternative protein source for individuals needing dietary modifications. Nevertheless, stronger clinical evidence is needed before mushroom protein can be definitively recommended for Metabolic Syndrome. Current use is best described as emerging and scientifically plausible, but not yet robustly validated.
