Oligosaccharides, particularly prebiotic types such as fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and galactooligosaccharides (GOS), have been studied for their potential impact on metabolic syndrome due to their ability to modulate gut microbiota. Several animal and human studies have reported that oligosaccharides can increase the abundance of beneficial gut bacteria (such as Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus), which are associated with improved glucose metabolism, lipid profiles, and reduced inflammation—key factors in metabolic syndrome. For example, some randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that supplementation with prebiotic oligosaccharides can improve insulin sensitivity and decrease markers of systemic inflammation in overweight or obese individuals. However, the magnitude of these effects tends to be modest, and not all studies have shown significant benefits. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses generally conclude that while there is a biological rationale and preliminary clinical evidence, the overall quality and consistency of human data remain limited, and further well-designed, large-scale studies are needed. Thus, the scientific evidence supporting the use of oligosaccharides for metabolic syndrome is emerging but not yet robust.
