Salidroside, a bioactive compound found in Rhodiola rosea, has been investigated for its potential to support or treat Metabolic Syndrome (MetS). Preclinical studies (cellular and animal models) suggest salidroside may improve insulin sensitivity, reduce blood glucose levels, ameliorate lipid profiles, and mitigate oxidative stress and inflammation—key factors underlying MetS. For example, several rodent studies have reported that salidroside supplementation leads to reduced body weight, improved glucose tolerance, decreased triglycerides, and lower inflammatory markers. Mechanistically, salidroside appears to modulate pathways such as AMPK activation and the inhibition of NF-κB signaling.
However, robust clinical evidence in humans is lacking. Most available data come from laboratory or animal experiments, and only a handful of small-scale human studies or trials of Rhodiola rosea (where salidroside is just one of many constituents) exist. The translation of these preclinical findings to humans remains uncertain. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses consistently highlight the need for well-designed clinical trials to determine efficacy and safety for metabolic health outcomes.
In summary, while there is scientific interest and promising preclinical evidence for salidroside’s role in managing Metabolic Syndrome, current human data are insufficient. Its use for this purpose is therefore supported by limited scientific validation, justifying a moderate-low evidence rating.
