Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Gelsemium sempervirens, commonly known as yellow jasmine, has a historical background in traditional medicine and homeopathy, where it has been used to address various conditions, including migraine. In homeopathic practice, Gelsemium is often recommended for headaches that are described as heavy, dull, or accompanied by visual disturbances and muscle weakness. However, this use is based on homeopathic principles of "like cures like" and highly diluted preparations, rather than robust clinical evidence.

Scientific research into Gelsemium’s efficacy for migraine is extremely limited. There are no high-quality, peer-reviewed clinical trials demonstrating its effectiveness for migraine treatment. Most references to its use in migraines are found in homeopathic materia medica and anecdotal reports. Some laboratory studies have explored the pharmacological properties of Gelsemium alkaloids, but these studies do not specifically address migraines, nor do they provide clear clinical relevance for this condition.

As such, the use of Gelsemium for migraine relief is primarily justified by tradition and homeopathic practice, rather than by scientific validation. Health authorities and mainstream clinical guidelines do not recognize Gelsemium as an evidence-based treatment for migraines.
