Evidence supporting the use of: Ginkgoside
For the health condition: Migraine
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ginkgosides are the active compounds found in Ginkgo biloba, a plant used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine. The historical use of Ginkgo has mostly focused on improving cognitive function and circulation, but in some traditional practices, it has also been suggested as a remedy for headaches, including migraines. The rationale is based on its purported ability to improve blood flow and its anti-inflammatory properties, which theoretically could address some migraine mechanisms. However, the evidence for Ginkgo or its ginkgoside constituents specifically in migraine prevention or treatment is limited and primarily anecdotal or based on small, poorly controlled studies. A few small clinical trials have explored Ginkgo biloba extracts (sometimes combined with other agents) for migraine prophylaxis, with mixed or inconclusive results. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses generally indicate insufficient high-quality evidence to support its use for migraines. Thus, its use for this purpose is mainly justified by traditional or historical precedent rather than robust scientific validation, and the overall quality of evidence is low.
