Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Lesser speargrass (Heteropogon contortus) has a history of use in traditional medicine in various parts of the world, especially in Asia and Africa. Folk remedies have employed different parts of the plant, including its roots and leaves, for a variety of ailments, including headaches and migraines. However, the documentation of its use specifically for migraine is sparse and largely anecdotal, originating from traditional healers and ethnobotanical reports rather than formalized traditional medical systems. There is very little published scientific research evaluating the efficacy or safety of Lesser speargrass for migraine relief. No clinical trials or pharmacological studies have substantiated its use for migraine or headache management. The evidence, therefore, is limited to traditional claims with no scientifically validated mechanism of action or active constituents specifically linked to migraine treatment. In summary, while Lesser speargrass has some traditional use for headache and possibly migraine relief in folk medicine, there is minimal documentation and no robust scientific validation supporting its use for this condition.
