Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) has a longstanding history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe. Historically, it was used for its analgesic (pain-relieving) and anti-inflammatory properties, which led to its application in treating headaches, including migraines. Meadowsweet contains salicylates, compounds chemically related to aspirin, which may contribute to its pain-relieving effects. However, while folklore and herbal texts cite its use for headache and migraine relief, there is a lack of robust clinical or pharmacological studies directly evaluating its efficacy and safety specifically for migraines in humans. Modern scientific validation for this use is minimal to nonexistent. Most contemporary references to Meadowsweet for migraine management draw from historical practice rather than empirical research. Therefore, while it is justified by tradition, the evidence rating is low due to scant scientific support.
