Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Potassium Beta-Hydroxybutyrate (BHB) is a ketone body salt used as an exogenous ketone supplement. Its use in supporting or treating migraine is based on emerging scientific evidence related to the neurological effects of ketosis. Several small clinical studies and case reports have investigated the potential benefit of ketogenic diets and exogenous ketone supplementation, including BHB, in migraine management. The proposed mechanism involves improved mitochondrial function, reduced neuronal excitability, and altered neurotransmitter balance, all of which may play roles in migraine pathophysiology.

A 2021 randomized controlled trial (Pediatric Neurology, 2021) found that exogenous ketone supplementation reduced migraine frequency in adolescents, though the study size was small. Additional studies of ketogenic diets (which increase endogenous BHB) have shown reductions in migraine frequency and severity, suggesting a role for ketone bodies in modulating migraine activity. However, direct evidence from large, high-quality randomized trials specifically studying Potassium BHB as a supplement for migraine is limited. Most current data comes from pilot studies, case series, or extrapolation from ketogenic diet research.

In summary, there is preliminary scientific validation for the use of Potassium Beta-Hydroxybutyrate in migraine, but the overall quality and quantity of evidence are moderate. Larger, well-controlled studies are needed to confirm efficacy and establish dosing guidelines.
