Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Rose water has a long history of traditional use in various cultures, particularly in Middle Eastern, Persian, and South Asian medicine, as a remedy for headaches and migraines. Folk remedies often include inhaling rose water vapor, applying it to the temples, or using it in compresses to provide soothing effects. The rationale behind this use is largely based on rose water’s pleasant fragrance and its perceived calming and anti-inflammatory properties. However, scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for migraine management is minimal to nonexistent. Few small studies have examined rose oil (not specifically rose water) for stress or headache relief, with some suggesting possible mild anxiolytic and relaxation effects, but these do not directly translate to migraine treatment or prevention. No robust clinical trials have validated rose water as an effective intervention for migraines. Therefore, while rose water’s use for migraine is rooted in tradition and anecdotal reports, it lacks substantial scientific validation.
