Evidence supporting the use of: Abuta
For the health condition: Miscarriage (prevention)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Abuta (Cissampelos pareira) has been traditionally used in various regions, particularly in South America and parts of Asia, to support women's reproductive health, including the prevention of miscarriage. In ethnobotanical records, indigenous and local communities have employed Abuta as a uterine tonic and to manage menstrual disorders, with references to its use in pregnancy for supporting gestational health and attempting to prevent miscarriage. The root and stem are commonly prepared as decoctions or infusions for these purposes. However, the scientific evidence supporting these uses is minimal and largely anecdotal. There are limited pharmacological studies investigating Abuta's safety or efficacy specifically in pregnancy or for miscarriage prevention. Some preliminary studies have documented the plant's anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic effects, which are proposed mechanisms for its traditional use in calming uterine contractions. Yet, robust clinical trials or toxicological evaluations are lacking, and the safety profile during pregnancy remains unclear. In some traditional systems, Abuta is even classified as potentially abortifacient if used in high doses. Overall, while Abuta's use for miscarriage prevention is supported by traditional practices, there is insufficient scientific validation, and its use in pregnancy should be approached with caution.
