Synopsis

Vitamin B9, also known as folate, and specifically in the form of calcium methylfolate (a bioavailable version), is supported by some scientific evidence for its role in reducing the risk of certain types of miscarriage, particularly those associated with neural tube defects or folate deficiency. Folate is essential for DNA synthesis, repair, and methylation, and is critical for proper cell division and growth during early pregnancy. Numerous studies have confirmed that folate deficiency increases the risk of neural tube defects, which can lead to miscarriage or severe fetal malformations.

Supplementation with folic acid (and by extension, methylfolate) before conception and in early pregnancy is widely recommended to reduce the risk of neural tube defects. However, the evidence that folate supplementation prevents all-cause miscarriage (i.e., miscarriage from any cause) is limited. Some observational studies suggest a correlation between adequate folate status and lower miscarriage rates, but large randomized controlled trials have not consistently shown that folate supplementation reduces the overall incidence of miscarriage not related to neural tube defects or severe folate deficiency.

In summary, there is scientific rationale for the use of Vitamin B9 in reducing miscarriage risk related to specific folate-dependent fetal abnormalities, but the evidence for preventing miscarriage in general is not strong. The use of methylfolate instead of standard folic acid may be beneficial for individuals with certain genetic polymorphisms (such as MTHFR mutations) affecting folate metabolism.
