Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ashitaba (Angelica keiskei) is a plant native to Japan, traditionally used as a health-promoting vegetable and medicinal herb. In recent years, scientific interest has grown regarding its potential effects on cellular health, particularly the mitochondria. Preclinical studies have indicated that compounds in ashitaba, especially chalcones such as 4-hydroxyderricin and xanthoangelol, may support mitochondrial function. A 2019 study published in Nature identified that ashitaba-derived chalcones can induce autophagy, a process that helps clear damaged cellular components, including dysfunctional mitochondria (mitophagy). Improved mitophagy is linked to enhanced mitochondrial health and cellular longevity in model organisms such as yeast, worms, and fruit flies.

However, it is important to note that most of the current evidence comes from animal models and in vitro experiments; there are no robust clinical trials in humans directly demonstrating ashitaba’s efficacy for mitochondrial support. The traditional use of ashitaba in Japan is broader, focusing on general vitality rather than specifically targeting mitochondrial function. Therefore, while there is promising preclinical scientific evidence suggesting ashitaba may benefit mitochondrial health, the lack of human studies limits the strength of this evidence.
