Beef liver is used to support mitochondrial health primarily due to its dense nutritional profile, which scientific research supports as beneficial for mitochondrial function. Beef liver is exceptionally rich in nutrients essential for mitochondrial energy production, including B vitamins (notably B2, B3, B5, B6, B12), iron, copper, and Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). Several studies emphasize the role of B vitamins and CoQ10 in mitochondrial bioenergetics: B vitamins serve as cofactors in the Krebs cycle and electron transport chain, while CoQ10 is a critical component of the mitochondrial respiratory chain, facilitating ATP production. Iron and copper are also required for the synthesis of cytochromes and other proteins involved in electron transfer. Deficiencies in these nutrients have been associated with impaired mitochondrial function and increased oxidative stress. While beef liver contains all these nutrients in bioavailable forms, there is limited direct evidence from clinical trials that beef liver supplementation specifically enhances mitochondrial function in humans. Most evidence is extrapolated from studies on individual nutrients rather than whole food interventions. Still, the established roles of these nutrients provide a rationale for beef liver’s use in supporting mitochondrial health.
