Caffeic acid is a naturally occurring polyphenolic compound found in many plants, including coffee, fruits, and vegetables. Some scientific studies have investigated its effects on mitochondrial function, primarily through its antioxidant properties. In cell and animal models, caffeic acid has been shown to reduce oxidative stress by scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can help protect mitochondria from damage. Additionally, there is evidence that caffeic acid may modulate mitochondrial biogenesis and improve mitochondrial membrane potential in vitro. For example, a study published in the journal Free Radical Biology & Medicine (2016) reported that caffeic acid protected mitochondria against oxidative injury in neuronal cells. Other research has indicated potential benefits in models of metabolic disorders, where mitochondrial dysfunction plays a role. However, direct clinical evidence in humans supporting the use of caffeic acid specifically for mitochondrial health is limited or lacking. Most available evidence comes from laboratory or animal studies, and the translation of these effects to human health is not yet clear. Therefore, while there is some scientific basis for the use of caffeic acid to support mitochondrial health, the strength of the evidence is moderate at best, and further research, especially in human subjects, is needed to substantiate these claims.
