Cistanche, particularly Cistanche deserticola, has gained attention for its potential to support mitochondrial function, but the evidence is still preliminary and largely based on laboratory and animal studies. Mitochondria are cellular organelles responsible for energy production, and their dysfunction is implicated in aging and various diseases. A few recent studies have investigated the effects of cistanche extracts and their active compounds, such as echinacoside and acteoside, on mitochondrial health. For instance, research published in Aging and Disease (2020) found that cistanche extract improved mitochondrial biogenesis and function in aging mouse models by activating the AMPK/PGC-1α signaling pathway. Another study in Phytomedicine (2013) demonstrated that cistanche extract could protect mitochondrial integrity and reduce oxidative stress in neuronal cells exposed to damaging agents.

While these findings are promising, they are not yet supported by robust human clinical trials. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has used cistanche mainly as a kidney tonic and for fatigue, which may indirectly relate to energy and mitochondrial health, but the direct link to mitochondrial support is a more recent, scientifically-driven area of interest. Therefore, while there is some scientific rationale and early evidence for cistanche's role in supporting mitochondrial function, the overall strength of evidence remains limited and further human studies are needed.
