Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an omega-3 fatty acid with documented roles in cell membrane structure and function, particularly in the brain, retina, and other high-energy tissues. There is scientific evidence suggesting that DHA supports mitochondrial function. Multiple in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that DHA can incorporate into mitochondrial membranes, improving membrane fluidity and potentially enhancing the efficiency of the electron transport chain. This effect may help optimize ATP generation and reduce oxidative stress. For example, research indicates that DHA supplementation can increase mitochondrial biogenesis and upregulate genes involved in oxidative phosphorylation. Additionally, DHA appears to have neuroprotective effects partly mediated through preserving mitochondrial integrity under stress conditions.

However, direct clinical evidence in humans is less robust. While there are promising mechanistic and preclinical findings, large-scale clinical trials confirming clear mitochondrial functional improvements or disease outcomes in humans are limited. Most human studies focus on neurological or cardiovascular benefits rather than direct mitochondrial measurements. Thus, the evidence base is moderate, with good mechanistic support from cell and animal models, but more high-quality human trials are needed to justify strong clinical recommendations for mitochondrial support specifically.
