Flavones are a subclass of flavonoids, which are polyphenolic compounds widely found in fruits, vegetables, and certain herbs. Scientific studies have increasingly investigated the potential of flavones to support mitochondrial function. Flavones such as apigenin, luteolin, and baicalein have been shown in preclinical studies (cell and animal models) to possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may protect mitochondria from oxidative stress and improve mitochondrial biogenesis. For example, research published in journals such as Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity and Free Radical Biology and Medicine suggests that flavones can enhance the activity of mitochondrial enzymes, reduce mitochondrial dysfunction, and modulate signaling pathways (such as AMPK and SIRT1) involved in mitochondrial health.
However, most of this evidence comes from laboratory and animal studies, with limited high-quality human clinical trials specifically demonstrating direct mitochondrial benefits from flavones. While the preclinical data are promising and provide a mechanistic rationale, more rigorous human studies are needed to firmly establish their efficacy in supporting mitochondrial function in humans. Therefore, while there is a scientific basis for the use of flavones to support mitochondrial health, the overall evidence remains moderate.
