Ginsenosides, the primary bioactive compounds in ginseng (Panax species), have been the focus of numerous scientific studies for their effects on mitochondrial function. Research demonstrates that certain ginsenosides, such as Rg1, Rb1, and Re, can modulate mitochondrial bioenergetics, enhance ATP production, and protect mitochondrial integrity under stress conditions. In vitro and animal studies suggest these compounds act by reducing oxidative stress, improving mitochondrial membrane potential, and activating signaling pathways involved in mitochondrial biogenesis, such as the AMPK and PGC-1α pathways. For example, a 2020 review in Antioxidants summarizes evidence that ginsenosides improve mitochondrial function in models of neurodegenerative diseases and metabolic disorders. However, most evidence is preclinical, and robust clinical trials in humans are limited. While initial human studies indicate possible benefits for fatigue and energy metabolism, more rigorous research is needed to confirm these effects specifically via mitochondrial mechanisms. In summary, scientific evidence—mostly from laboratory and animal research—supports the potential of ginsenosides to support mitochondrial health, but clinical validation remains limited at present.
