Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Glutathione is widely recognized for its role in supporting mitochondrial health, and this use is primarily justified by scientific evidence. Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of glutamine, cysteine, and glycine, and functions as a major endogenous antioxidant within cells. Its highest concentrations are found in the mitochondria, where it plays a crucial role in neutralizing reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated during cellular respiration. Excessive ROS can damage mitochondrial DNA, proteins, and lipids, leading to impaired energy production and even cell death.

Multiple studies have demonstrated that glutathione deficiency is linked to mitochondrial dysfunction and increased oxidative stress. Experimental research in cellular and animal models shows that depletion of glutathione leads to impaired mitochondrial function and increased susceptibility to oxidative damage, while supplementation or upregulation of glutathione can restore mitochondrial integrity and performance. For example, studies published in journals such as Biochimica et Biophysica Acta and Free Radical Biology and Medicine provide evidence that glutathione directly protects the mitochondrial membrane and supports ATP production.

However, it should be noted that while the mechanistic and preclinical evidence is strong, clinical trials in humans are more limited, especially regarding the direct effects of oral glutathione supplementation on mitochondrial function. Therefore, the evidence rating is moderate, reflecting robust laboratory support but less clinical validation.
