Goji berry (Lycium barbarum) has been traditionally used in Chinese medicine for general vitality and longevity, but recent scientific research has begun to explore its effects on mitochondrial function. Several preclinical studies (mostly in vitro and in animal models) suggest that goji berry polysaccharides may enhance mitochondrial biogenesis and protect mitochondria from oxidative damage. These effects are attributed to the antioxidant properties of the berries, which reduce reactive oxygen species (ROS) and help maintain mitochondrial membrane potential. There is also evidence that goji berry extracts can upregulate the expression of mitochondrial regulatory genes, such as PGC-1α, and improve cellular energy production under stress conditions.

However, the majority of this evidence comes from laboratory and animal studies. Clinical trials in humans are limited and have not specifically focused on mitochondrial function as a primary outcome. Therefore, while the scientific rationale exists and is supported by preclinical data, direct evidence for goji berry’s benefits on mitochondrial function in humans is weak. Overall, the use of goji berry to support the mitochondrial body system is partially justified by emerging scientific findings, but further high-quality human studies are needed to confirm efficacy.
