Ketones, specifically in the form of exogenous ketones (such as beta-hydroxybutyrate), are scientifically studied for their effects on mitochondrial function. Mitochondria are the energy-producing organelles in cells, and ketones serve as an alternative fuel source when glucose is scarce, such as during fasting or ketogenic diets. Research indicates that ketone bodies can enhance mitochondrial efficiency and biogenesis, reduce oxidative stress, and improve cellular energy production. For example, studies have shown that beta-hydroxybutyrate can increase mitochondrial respiration and ATP production, while also reducing the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are damaging byproducts of energy metabolism. These effects are particularly relevant in neurological tissues, and there is emerging evidence suggesting potential benefits in neurodegenerative diseases where mitochondrial dysfunction is a hallmark. However, much of the current evidence comes from animal models, in vitro studies, and a limited number of human trials. While there is a reasonable scientific basis for the use of ketones to support mitochondrial function, the clinical relevance and long-term safety in humans require further investigation. Therefore, while the use is scientifically justified, the overall evidence strength at this time is moderate rather than robust.
