Ketone salts are supplements that provide exogenous ketones, typically beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), bound to minerals like sodium, potassium, or calcium. The rationale for their use in supporting mitochondrial function is based on the ability of ketones to serve as an alternative energy substrate for mitochondria, especially when glucose availability is low (e.g., during fasting or ketogenic diets). Ketones can be efficiently metabolized by mitochondria to generate ATP, which is the primary energy currency in cells.
Some preclinical and limited human studies suggest that ketone bodies may enhance mitochondrial efficiency, reduce the production of reactive oxygen species, and potentially improve cellular resilience under stress conditions. However, the majority of this evidence comes from animal studies, in vitro experiments, or from research using endogenous ketosis (i.e., through ketogenic diets), rather than exogenous ketone salt supplementation specifically.
There is a paucity of high-quality, long-term clinical trials directly demonstrating that ketone salts have a significant, sustained effect on mitochondrial function or health in humans. Most available studies are small, short-term, and often focused on athletic performance or cognitive effects rather than direct mitochondrial outcomes. Therefore, while there is a plausible scientific mechanism and some preliminary evidence, the overall strength of the evidence is limited at present.
