Maqui berry (Aristotelia chilensis) is a fruit native to Chile and Argentina, known for its high content of anthocyanins and other polyphenolic compounds. There is emerging scientific interest in maqui berry for mitochondrial support, primarily based on its antioxidant properties. Mitochondria are particularly susceptible to oxidative damage, which can impair their function. Antioxidants like those found in maqui berry may help protect mitochondria from oxidative stress.

Several preclinical studies have shown that maqui berry extracts can reduce oxidative stress markers in cell cultures and animal models. For example, delphinidins, the primary anthocyanins in maqui, have demonstrated a capacity to improve mitochondrial function and reduce reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in vitro.
