Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Oxaloacetic acid (also known as oxaloacetate) is a key intermediate in the citric acid (Krebs) cycle, which is central to mitochondrial energy production. Its role in cellular metabolism has prompted scientific investigation into its potential as a dietary supplement to support mitochondrial function. Preclinical studies, primarily in animal models and cell cultures, suggest that oxaloacetate supplementation may help modulate mitochondrial metabolism, reduce oxidative stress, and support cellular energy production. Some pilot human studies have explored its effects on fatigue and age-related metabolic decline, but robust clinical data are lacking.

While there is a plausible biochemical rationale and some early-stage research indicating that oxaloacetate may support mitochondrial health, the evidence remains limited. Most available data come from mechanistic studies or small, uncontrolled human trials. There is not yet strong clinical evidence to support its widespread use for mitochondrial support in humans. Therefore, the scientific validation is preliminary, and the strength of evidence is currently rated as low (2 out of 5). Further well-controlled, large-scale clinical trials are needed to confirm any definitive benefits of oxaloacetate supplementation for mitochondrial function in humans.
