Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Fatty acid or fat/oil supplements, often present as proprietary blends, are supported by scientific evidence for their role in mitochondrial function. The mitochondria are responsible for cellular energy production, primarily via oxidative phosphorylation. Certain fatty acids, particularly omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) such as EPA and DHA, have been shown in multiple studies to support mitochondrial membranes, enhance mitochondrial biogenesis, and improve efficiency of the electron transport chain. For example, research has demonstrated that omega-3 supplementation can increase the expression of genes related to mitochondrial biogenesis (e.g., PGC-1α) and may reduce oxidative stress by modulating mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation (J Physiol. 2014; Cell Metab. 2018). Furthermore, medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) can be rapidly oxidized by mitochondria and used as an efficient energy source, with some evidence suggesting benefits for mitochondrial disorders and neurodegenerative diseases (Front Physiol. 2019). However, the strength of evidence depends on the specific fatty acid used, the population studied, and the endpoint measured. Most studies support a positive effect, but not all results are consistent, and dose, duration, and purity are important variables. Proprietary blends, which may contain unspecified proportions of various fats, can complicate interpretation. Overall, while not all fatty acids are equally effective, the use of certain fat supplements to support mitochondrial health is rooted in scientific validation rather than tradition.
