Rhodiola crenulata is an adaptogenic herb traditionally used in Asia for enhancing stamina and combating fatigue. Recent scientific interest has focused on its potential to support mitochondrial function, which is central to cellular energy production. Several in vitro and animal studies have indicated that Rhodiola extracts, often standardized to salidroside and rosavin content, may enhance mitochondrial biogenesis and improve mitochondrial efficiency.

Key preclinical studies suggest that Rhodiola crenulata supplementation can upregulate genes involved in mitochondrial energy metabolism, such as PGC-1α and NRF1, and increase ATP production in skeletal muscle cells. These effects are hypothesized to occur via activation of AMPK and related energy-regulating pathways. Additionally, antioxidant properties of Rhodiola’s active compounds may help protect mitochondria from oxidative stress and dysfunction.

However, while these mechanistic findings are promising, robust clinical trials in humans are limited. The majority of human studies with Rhodiola have assessed its effects on fatigue, mood, or exercise performance, with only indirect implications for mitochondrial health. Thus, while there is a growing body of scientific evidence from laboratory models supporting Rhodiola crenulata’s role in mitochondrial support, direct clinical validation in humans remains preliminary.
