Evidence supporting the use of: Succinic acid
For the body system: Mitochondria
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Succinic acid is a naturally occurring dicarboxylic acid that plays a critical role in the mitochondrial energy cycle, specifically as an intermediate in the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, also known as the Krebs cycle. This cycle is fundamental to cellular respiration and energy (ATP) production in virtually all eukaryotic organisms, including humans. Because of its central metabolic role, succinic acid has attracted some interest as a dietary supplement intended to support mitochondrial health and energy production.
Scientific studies confirm the biochemical importance of succinic acid in mitochondrial function. However, direct clinical evidence supporting the supplementation of succinic acid for enhanced mitochondrial performance or health in humans is limited. Some animal and cell studies suggest that succinate may influence mitochondrial signaling, help restore energy metabolism under stress, and potentially reduce oxidative stress. For instance, research has explored succinate's role in ischemic preconditioning and as a signaling molecule affecting reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Still, these findings have not consistently translated into clinically significant benefits in human trials.
In summary, while succinic acid is scientifically validated as a critical mitochondrial metabolite, robust clinical evidence for its use as a supplement to support the mitochondrial body system in humans is still emerging. Therefore, support for its supplementation is based on mechanistic plausibility rather than strong clinical outcomes.
