Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme naturally present in nearly all aerobic cells, including those of the mitochondria. Its primary role is to catalyze the dismutation of superoxide radicals—highly reactive byproducts of mitochondrial respiration—into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide, which are less harmful and further detoxified by other enzymes. Scientific validation for SOD’s importance in mitochondrial health is strong at the mechanistic and cellular levels. Numerous studies have demonstrated that SOD protects mitochondrial components from oxidative damage, which is implicated in aging and a variety of degenerative diseases.

However, the evidence for using supplemental SOD to support mitochondrial function in humans is limited. SOD as a protein is poorly absorbed orally due to degradation in the digestive tract, though some novel formulations (e.g., encapsulated or plant-derived sources) are under investigation. Animal studies and some preliminary human trials suggest that SOD supplementation may reduce markers of oxidative stress, but consistent, robust evidence for clinical benefits—specifically targeting mitochondrial health in humans—is lacking.

In summary, while SOD is scientifically validated as a key player in mitochondrial antioxidant defense, the use of SOD supplements to support the mitochondrial body system in humans is supported by moderate (but not strong) evidence, mostly from preclinical research and early-phase human studies.
