Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Thyroid substance, typically referring to desiccated thyroid extract from animal glands, is used to support mitochondrial function primarily in the context of hypothyroidism. The thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) are critical regulators of metabolic processes, including mitochondrial activity, by promoting the expression of genes involved in energy metabolism and mitochondrial biogenesis. Scientific studies have demonstrated that hypothyroid states are associated with reduced mitochondrial number and impaired function, leading to symptoms such as fatigue and decreased metabolic rate. Supplementation with thyroid hormones, whether synthetic or from glandular extracts, restores mitochondrial bioenergetics and normalizes cellular metabolism in hypothyroid patients.

However, the use of desiccated thyroid itself is less studied in modern research compared to synthetic levothyroxine or liothyronine. Most evidence supporting the role of thyroid hormones in mitochondrial function is derived from studies using purified hormones. Nonetheless, the physiological rationale for using thyroid substance to support mitochondrial health in individuals with thyroid hormone deficiency is well-established. There is little evidence to suggest benefit in euthyroid individuals (those with normal thyroid function), and inappropriate use can lead to adverse effects.

In summary, there is strong scientific evidence that thyroid hormones support mitochondrial function, with desiccated thyroid being a traditional form of replacement therapy. Its use is justified for those with thyroid hormone deficiency but not for the general population.
