Trace minerals, including elements such as zinc, selenium, copper, manganese, and iron, are scientifically recognized as essential cofactors in many mitochondrial enzymes and processes. The mitochondria are responsible for cellular energy production through oxidative phosphorylation, a process heavily reliant on the proper function of electron transport chain complexes. Several trace minerals act as critical structural or functional components of these complexes. For example, iron is a key part of cytochromes, while copper is essential for cytochrome c oxidase activity. Manganese and selenium function as cofactors for antioxidant enzymes like superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, which protect mitochondria from oxidative damage.

Deficiencies in these trace minerals have been shown to impair mitochondrial function and energy production in both animal and human studies. Conversely, adequate intake supports normal mitochondrial activity. However, there is limited evidence that supplementation above normal dietary levels provides additional benefit in healthy individuals, and excessive intake of certain trace minerals can be toxic. Most clinical research focuses on correcting deficiencies rather than enhancing mitochondrial function in already healthy people. Thus, while the scientific basis for the necessity of trace minerals in mitochondrial health is strong, the evidence for supplementation beyond a balanced diet to specifically "support the mitochondria" is moderate.
