Vitamin C (ascorbate) has a scientifically established role as an essential micronutrient and antioxidant. Its primary functions involve collagen synthesis, immune function, and acting as a cofactor in several enzymatic reactions. Regarding mitochondrial support, Vitamin C indirectly supports mitochondrial health through its antioxidant properties, helping to neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by mitochondrial respiration. Excessive ROS can damage mitochondrial DNA, proteins, and lipids, impairing mitochondrial function.

There is some evidence from cell culture and animal studies indicating that ascorbate may preserve mitochondrial integrity under oxidative stress and may play a role in maintaining mitochondrial membrane potential. Some in vitro studies suggest Vitamin C can protect against mitochondrial dysfunction induced by toxins or metabolic stress. However, direct evidence from human studies showing that vitamin C supplementation significantly improves mitochondrial function in healthy individuals or in mitochondrial disease is limited and generally not robust.

Thus, while there is a scientific rationale for Vitamin C’s supportive role in protecting mitochondria from oxidative damage, the evidence for direct, clinically meaningful mitochondrial support in humans is modest. Most clinical recommendations for vitamin C focus on preventing deficiency and supporting general antioxidant status rather than specifically targeting mitochondrial health.
