Vitamin E, particularly in the form of mixed tocotrienols, has garnered scientific interest for its role in mitochondrial health. The mitochondria are particularly susceptible to oxidative stress due to their role in cellular respiration and energy production, which generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) as byproducts. Vitamin E is a lipid-soluble antioxidant, and both tocopherols and tocotrienols can protect mitochondrial membranes from lipid peroxidation. Some cell and animal studies have demonstrated that tocotrienols, in particular, may be more effective than tocopherols at preventing oxidative damage within the mitochondria. There is evidence that tocotrienols can preserve mitochondrial function, reduce oxidative injury, and modulate mitochondrial biogenesis pathways in preclinical models.

However, clinical studies in humans are limited, and the majority of evidence comes from in vitro or animal studies. While Vitamin E deficiency is known to impair mitochondrial function, supplementation in otherwise healthy humans has not been conclusively shown to enhance mitochondrial health or function. The evidence suggests a potential benefit, especially under conditions of increased oxidative stress, but this remains to be validated in large-scale, high-quality human trials.
