Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Zinc lipoic acid is a supplement that combines zinc, an essential trace mineral, with alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), a naturally occurring antioxidant. Both ingredients have mechanistic and some clinical evidence supporting their role in supporting mitochondrial function:

  • Zinc: Zinc is a cofactor for several enzymes involved in mitochondrial energy production, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), which helps manage oxidative stress within mitochondria. Zinc deficiency has been linked to impaired mitochondrial function and increased oxidative damage in preclinical models.
  • Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA): ALA directly participates as a coenzyme in mitochondrial energy metabolism (specifically in the pyruvate dehydrogenase and alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase complexes). It also functions as a potent antioxidant, regenerating other antioxidants and reducing oxidative stress, which is essential for maintaining mitochondrial integrity. Human studies have shown that ALA supplementation can improve mitochondrial function in certain contexts, such as diabetic neuropathy and age-related decline.

However, while both zinc and ALA have roles in mitochondrial health, direct clinical evidence for the combined supplement "zinc lipoic acid" in supporting mitochondrial function in humans is limited. Most evidence comes from studies examining the individual components rather than the combined form. Thus, the scientific justification is moderate (rated 3), primarily based on mechanistic plausibility and some supportive clinical data for the individual ingredients.
