Evidence supporting the use of: Lactobacillus reuteri
For the health condition: Mood Swings
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Lactobacillus reuteri is a probiotic bacterium that has garnered scientific attention for its potential role in supporting mental health, including mood regulation. Preclinical studies, mainly in animal models, have suggested that L. reuteri can influence the gut-brain axis—a complex communication network linking the gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system. Research indicates that administration of L. reuteri may increase levels of oxytocin, a hormone associated with social bonding and stress reduction, and modulate inflammatory pathways, both of which are implicated in mood disorders. For example, a 2019 study in mice demonstrated that L. reuteri supplementation improved social behaviors and reduced anxiety-like behaviors, potentially via modulation of immune signaling and neurotransmitter pathways.
However, direct evidence in humans is limited. Small pilot studies and some clinical trials have reported that multi-strain probiotics (including L. reuteri) can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, but it is unclear how much benefit is attributable specifically to L. reuteri. No large, high-quality randomized controlled trials have confirmed a robust effect of L. reuteri on mood swings specifically. Thus, while there is a plausible mechanistic basis and preliminary animal data, clinical evidence in humans remains weak and more research is needed to establish efficacy for mood swings. The current rating reflects promising early findings but insufficient proof.
