Evidence supporting the use of: Lithium orotate
For the health condition: Mood Swings
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 1
Lithium orotate is sometimes used as an over-the-counter supplement to support mood swings, largely based on its relationship to prescription lithium, which is well-established for the treatment of bipolar disorder. However, the scientific evidence supporting the use of lithium orotate itself for mood swings is extremely limited. Lithium carbonate and lithium citrate, prescribed at much higher doses under medical supervision, are proven to be effective for stabilizing mood and treating bipolar disorder. In contrast, lithium orotate is available as a dietary supplement and contains much lower doses of lithium. A handful of small, poorly controlled studies and anecdotal reports suggest that lithium orotate may have some mood-stabilizing effects, but these have not been rigorously validated in large, well-designed clinical trials. Additionally, concerns have been raised about the safety and bioavailability of lithium orotate compared to pharmaceutical lithium preparations. Major medical organizations and regulatory bodies do not endorse lithium orotate for the treatment of mood swings. In summary, while there is a scientific rationale based on lithium’s established pharmacology, there is minimal direct scientific evidence supporting the efficacy and safety of lithium orotate supplements for mood swings, and their use should be approached with caution.
