Acemannan is a polysaccharide extracted from the inner leaf gel of Aloe vera. There is scientific evidence supporting its use for supporting the health of mucus membranes, particularly in the gastrointestinal tract. Acemannan has been shown in several preclinical studies to possess immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. For example, research indicates that acemannan can enhance the proliferation and migration of epithelial cells, which are crucial for the repair and maintenance of mucosal barriers (Choi et al., 2014). Animal studies also suggest that acemannan administration can accelerate the healing of gastric ulcers and protect the intestinal mucosa under conditions of stress or injury (Yagi et al., 2009).

Human clinical data are more limited, but some small studies and case reports support the potential of Aloe vera gel (which contains acemannan) in managing oral mucositis and minor wounds in the oral cavity. The mechanism is thought to involve the stimulation of macrophage activity and the production of growth factors that promote mucosal healing. Overall, while there is a plausible scientific basis and some supporting research, larger and more rigorous clinical trials are still needed to confirm these benefits and establish standardized dosing protocols.
