Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Flavonones are a subclass of flavonoids, a group of polyphenolic plant compounds commonly found in citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, and grapefruits. There is a growing body of scientific literature indicating that flavonones, particularly hesperidin, naringenin, and eriodictyol, can play a role in supporting the health of mucus membranes. Mucus membranes line various cavities in the body and serve as a barrier against pathogens and irritants.

Flavonones exhibit anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties, which may contribute to the protection and maintenance of mucus membrane integrity. Several in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that flavonones can reduce oxidative stress and inflammatory cytokine production in epithelial tissues, potentially reducing damage to mucus membranes. Additionally, some clinical studies on hesperidin and naringenin suggest these compounds may help reduce symptoms of conditions like allergic rhinitis and sinusitis, which directly involve mucus membrane function.

However, while the preliminary evidence is promising, large-scale human clinical trials specifically investigating the effects of flavonones on mucus membrane health are limited. Most of the supportive evidence comes from mechanistic studies or studies with related outcomes (such as anti-inflammatory effects in the respiratory tract). Therefore, the evidence is rated as moderate (3/5), with scientific validation but a need for further research.
