Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Guaco (Mikania glomerata or Mikania guaco) is an herb traditionally used in South American herbal medicine, particularly in Brazil, to support the respiratory system and mucous membranes. The plant contains coumarin and other compounds believed to have bronchodilatory and expectorant effects. Historically, guaco has been used for coughs, bronchitis, asthma, and other respiratory issues where excessive mucus is present. Its traditional use involves teas or syrups made from the leaves to help ease breathing and reduce mucus production.

Scientific studies on guaco for mucous membrane support are limited. Some in vitro and small-scale clinical studies suggest mild bronchodilatory and anti-inflammatory effects, likely due to coumarin and related phytochemicals, but robust clinical trials are lacking. As a result, its primary justification for supporting the mucous membranes is based on traditional use rather than strong scientific validation. Users should also be aware of potential adverse effects, as coumarin can be hepatotoxic in high doses. Overall, while traditional evidence supports its use for respiratory and mucous membrane health, scientific validation remains limited and preliminary.
