Evidence supporting the use of: Lactobacillus (unspecified)
For the body system: Mucus Membranes
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Lactobacillus is a genus of probiotic bacteria commonly found in the human microbiota, especially in the gut, oral cavity, and urogenital tract—all areas lined with mucus membranes. Scientific research has shown that certain strains of Lactobacillus can support mucus membrane health through several mechanisms. These bacteria are known to enhance the barrier function of epithelial cells, stimulate production of protective mucins, and competitively inhibit the adhesion and growth of pathogenic microbes, thereby reducing the risk of infections and inflammation in mucus membranes.
Clinical studies have demonstrated benefits of oral Lactobacillus supplementation for conditions like oral mucositis, vaginal health (e.g., reducing bacterial vaginosis recurrence), and prevention of some gastrointestinal infections—all of which involve mucus membrane surfaces. Preclinical and human studies have also shown that Lactobacillus can modulate immune responses at these surfaces, promoting anti-inflammatory effects and helping maintain mucosal integrity.
However, these effects are often strain-specific, and not all Lactobacillus species or strains have demonstrated such benefits. Much of the research is focused on well-characterized strains such as Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG or Lactobacillus reuteri. The overall body of evidence supports a beneficial role for Lactobacillus in mucus membrane health, but the evidence is not universal or equally strong for all strains or all types of mucus membranes. Therefore, the evidence is rated as moderate (3/5).
