Myrtle (Myrtus communis) has a long history of traditional use, particularly in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern herbal medicine, for supporting the health of mucus membranes. Traditional herbalists have employed myrtle leaves and berries in preparations for conditions affecting the respiratory tract, such as bronchitis, sinusitis, and catarrh, where excessive or compromised mucus production is a concern. Myrtle was valued for its astringent, antiseptic, and mild expectorant properties, with topical and internal applications historically used for soothing inflamed mucus membranes in the mouth, throat, and nasal passages.
Despite its well-documented use in folk medicine, modern scientific validation for myrtle’s efficacy in supporting mucus membranes is limited. Some laboratory studies have identified antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory constituents in myrtle, such as myrtucommulone and other polyphenols, which could theoretically benefit mucus membrane health. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and there is insufficient evidence to confirm its effectiveness by modern standards. Therefore, while myrtle’s use is justified by tradition and supported by anecdotal reports and historical texts, the current scientific evidence base is modest and does not reach beyond preliminary or in vitro findings.
