Neem (Azadirachta indica) has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for supporting mucus membrane health, particularly in the mouth, throat, and gastrointestinal tract. In Ayurveda, neem is considered to have "cooling" and "detoxifying" properties and is used for managing conditions involving excess heat or inflammation of the mucus membranes, such as oral ulcers, gingivitis, and sore throat. Neem twigs are commonly used as chewing sticks to promote oral hygiene and protect the mucosa of the mouth, while neem leaves and extracts are sometimes used internally to support gut health and manage minor inflammatory conditions.
However, the scientific evidence directly supporting neem's efficacy in maintaining or restoring mucus membrane health is limited.
