Olive (Olea europaea), particularly its oil, has a long history of use in traditional medicine for supporting skin and mucous membrane health. In Mediterranean folk practices, olive oil has been used topically and internally to soothe dry or irritated mucous membranes, such as in the mouth, throat, or digestive tract. The rationale is typically based on olive oil’s emollient, lubricating, and mild anti-inflammatory properties, which can help maintain moisture and comfort in mucosal tissues.

From a scientific perspective, olive oil contains monounsaturated fatty acids and phenolic compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, which may indirectly support the integrity of mucous membranes. However, direct clinical evidence specifically linking olive or olive oil to the maintenance or healing of mucous membranes in humans is limited. Some animal studies and in vitro investigations suggest beneficial effects on mucosal healing or protection, but robust human trials are lacking. Therefore, while tradition supports its use, scientific validation is partial and mostly extrapolated from general properties rather than direct demonstration in this body system.
