Polyphenols are a diverse group of naturally occurring compounds found in plants, recognized for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties. Scientific evidence, though still emerging, suggests that polyphenols may help support the health and function of mucus membranes, which line the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary tracts. Several studies have shown that polyphenols such as flavonoids, catechins, and phenolic acids can modulate inflammatory pathways and reduce oxidative stress in epithelial tissues, which make up the mucus membranes. For example, research indicates that green tea polyphenols (e.g., epigallocatechin gallate) can reduce inflammation and protect the integrity of oral and gastric mucosa. Similarly, resveratrol and quercetin have demonstrated protective effects on the gut lining in animal models and cell cultures, primarily by decreasing pro-inflammatory cytokines and enhancing barrier function.
However, most of the evidence comes from in vitro studies, animal research, or small clinical trials. Large, well-controlled human studies specifically examining the effects of polyphenols on mucus membrane health are limited. While the general antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of polyphenols are well-supported, direct evidence for their role in maintaining or restoring mucus membrane integrity in humans is moderate. Therefore, polyphenols are considered to have a scientific basis for supporting mucus membranes, but the strength of evidence is not yet robust.
