Zinc-l-Carnosine (also known as polaprezinc) is supported by a moderate body of scientific evidence for its role in supporting mucus membrane health, particularly in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. This compound consists of zinc and the dipeptide L-carnosine, which together exhibit greater efficacy than either component alone. Clinical studies, especially from Japan where it is approved as a treatment for gastric ulcers, indicate that Zinc-l-Carnosine can enhance the repair and protection of the gastric mucosa. Its mechanisms appear to involve stabilizing the mucus layer, promoting epithelial cell proliferation, and exerting anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Several randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that Zinc-l-Carnosine supplementation can reduce symptoms of gastric discomfort, promote ulcer healing, and protect against damage from NSAIDs or H. pylori infection.

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses (see: PubMed) support its efficacy in treating gastric ulcers and other GI mucosal injuries. Its use has also been explored for oral mucositis in cancer patients, with some positive findings. While most research focuses on gastric and oral mucosa, there is a plausible rationale for its benefit to other mucus membranes, though direct evidence is more limited. Overall, the evidence base is robust for GI applications and growing for other mucosal tissues.
