Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Andarine (also known as S-4) is a selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM) that has been investigated in preclinical and early human research for its potential to increase muscle mass and improve muscle tone, particularly in conditions involving muscle wasting (sarcopenia) or cachexia. The rationale for its use is based on its ability to selectively stimulate androgen receptors in muscle and bone, thereby promoting anabolic activity without many of the side effects associated with traditional anabolic steroids.
Most of the available evidence comes from animal studies and a limited number of early-phase human clinical trials. These studies suggest that Andarine can increase lean body mass and improve muscle strength in models of muscle wasting. For example, preclinical trials in rodents have demonstrated significant improvements in muscle mass with Andarine administration. However, human data are sparse, and no large-scale, peer-reviewed clinical trials have conclusively established its efficacy or safety for treating lack of muscle tone or muscle wasting in clinical populations.
Andarine is not approved by the FDA or other regulatory agencies for medical use, and its safety profile in humans is not well understood. The current level of scientific evidence supporting its use for muscle tone is limited, and concerns remain about potential side effects, including visual disturbances and negative effects on lipid profiles. Therefore, while there is some scientific basis for its muscle-promoting effects, the evidence is not robust, and clinical use is not recommended outside of research settings.
