For the health condition: Muscle Tone (lack of)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Antler horn (often referred to as deer antler velvet) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where it is believed to tonify the kidney and liver, support yang energy, and improve physical strength and muscle tone. Historical texts and practitioners have used antler horn preparations for centuries in the context of treating conditions associated with weakness, fatigue, and muscle wasting, especially in the elderly or those recovering from illness. The rationale in TCM often connects muscle tone to the strength of the kidney and liver systems, for which antler horn is a prized therapeutic.
However, scientific evidence supporting these claims is minimal. A small number of animal studies and limited human trials have explored the effects of deer antler velvet extracts on muscle recovery and performance, but results are generally inconclusive or show only modest benefit. Most scientific reviews conclude that there is insufficient clinical evidence to justify its use for improving muscle tone or muscle strength in humans. Regulatory agencies in many countries do not recognize antler horn as an effective treatment for muscle tone disorders. Thus, its use for this purpose is primarily rooted in traditional practice rather than robust scientific validation.
