Banyan (Ficus benghalensis) has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine in India. In Ayurveda, various parts of the banyan tree, such as the bark, aerial roots, and leaves, are described as having tonic and rejuvenative properties. Traditional texts sometimes reference banyan as a "rasayana," meaning it is believed to promote overall vitality, strength, and muscle health. Specifically, the latex, bark, and root extracts have been used in formulations intended to address general debility, improve body strength, and support muscle tone or mass, particularly in individuals with wasting conditions or after illness. However, these uses are largely based on empirical and anecdotal traditional knowledge rather than rigorous scientific studies. Modern scientific research on banyan's effects specifically on muscle tone or muscle health is scant, and there is limited pharmacological evidence to directly support its efficacy for this indication. Most available research focuses on other properties such as anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, and antimicrobial effects. Therefore, while banyan is traditionally used to support muscle tone, this use is not robustly validated by modern science, and the evidence remains primarily historical and traditional.
