Rating (out of 5): 3

Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs)—leucine, isoleucine, and valine—are commonly used as dietary supplements to support muscle health and improve muscle tone, particularly in individuals experiencing muscle wasting or sarcopenia. Scientific studies indicate that BCAAs, especially leucine, play a key role in stimulating muscle protein synthesis through activation of the mTOR pathway. Clinical trials have shown that BCAA supplementation can help preserve lean body mass in populations at risk of muscle loss, such as the elderly or those with certain chronic illnesses.

However, evidence for BCAAs specifically improving "muscle tone" (defined as the continuous and passive partial contraction of the muscles) in healthy individuals is less robust. Most research supports their benefit in preventing muscle breakdown and assisting in recovery after exercise, rather than directly enhancing muscle tone. Furthermore, while BCAAs are widely used in sports and bodybuilding communities, studies suggest that their impact is most pronounced when overall protein intake is insufficient, and they are less beneficial for those already consuming adequate dietary protein.

In summary, there is moderate scientific evidence supporting the use of BCAAs in maintaining or improving muscle mass in at-risk groups, which may indirectly support muscle tone. However, direct effects on muscle tone in healthy individuals are less clearly established.
