Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Chinese Silkvine (Periploca sepium), known as "Xiānɡ Jiā Pí" (in Chinese), has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is traditionally used to "dispel wind-dampness," "strengthen sinews and bones," and "unblock the channels." In TCM terminology, these actions are associated with the treatment of conditions such as weakness, numbness, and lack of muscle tone, particularly in disorders like flaccidity syndrome (Wei Zheng). However, the traditional use is based on empirical and theoretical frameworks specific to TCM rather than on modern clinical or pharmacological data. Current scientific research on Chinese Silkvine is limited and mostly centers on its potential anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. There are no robust or well-controlled clinical trials demonstrating its efficacy for improving muscle tone (hypotonia) or directly supporting neuromuscular function. Therefore, while its use for muscle tone is justified by historical and traditional practices, the quality of evidence is low, and there is little to no modern scientific validation for its efficacy in this specific context.
